Commissioning Projects

The Appalachian Wind Quintet, with the support of the Washington County Arts Council, has developed a commissioning project. This initiative was developed to help give opportunity and voice to Mid-Atlantic composers, and to expand the literature for woodwind quintets. The quintet works with composers throughout the writing process (if requested), and then gives the premiere performance. The following compositions have been commissioned by the quintet.

Sextet, for Woodwind Quintet and Piano (1997) by Dr. William Bland

Five Limericks – miniatures for wind quintet (1998) by Dr. Neal Corwell

Appalachian Season – Spring, for Woodwind Quintet and Organ (2000) by Dr. Wayne Wold

Woodwind Dances (2003) by Dr. Mark McCoy

New Work by composer Dr. Neal Corwell to be premiered October 11, 2009 at the Washington County Museum of Art, Hagerstown, MD.

"My experiences with the Appalachian Wind Quintet are numerous and varied; not only have I heard them on more than a dozen occasions, I also have performed with them and have composed music for them. This group never fails to present programs that are extremely interesting and performed with a high level of artistry. Always a mountain-top experience!"
Dr. Wayne L. Wold, Keyboardist, Composer, and Associate
Professor of Music at Hood College
